Consider the following...

Follow your interests.  Is there a community activity or issue that draws your attention?  Then get involved through volunteering.  People who volunteer in their area of interest are motivated to make a difference.

Motivation: There are many reasons why people volunteer. Be aware of yours.

Ten Reasons to Volunteer

  • To make a difference, to stand for an issue
  • To feel useful and needed
  • To use your skills, imagination, insight, values or talents
  • To gain experience, develop skills, explore new career paths or to network
  • To meet new uplifting people, make new acquaintances and possibly friends
  • To become involved in the community
  • To achieve personal growth, take on challenges, find new pursuits or renew old ones
  • To keep physically and mentally active
  • To fulfill an obligation, to give back
  • To have fun

Assess your skills: What talents do you wish to share through volunteering? Are there skills you wish to develop while volunteering?

Time: Make sure the opportunity fits your availability. There are volunteer opportunities in your community where you could volunteer an hour a week, a few times per month, or just once a year. Combine volunteering with family and/or friend time. The Volunteer Center is aware of family-friendly and group volunteer opportunities.

Location: Remember to pick a convenient location; somewhere close to school, work or home is best.

Be aware of your needs: Think about what you need to be an effective volunteer. Identify and verbalize any special arrangements or needs you may have.
